Abstract

This study aims to investigate improvements in pupils’ learning outcomes in the subject of arithmetic operations with fractions through the use of the ‘Fractions Adventure’ television programme and the ‘Fractions Adventure Map’, both based on the local wisdom of the Toba Batak people. This study employs a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental method and a one-group pre-test–post-test design. The research subjects comprised 20 Year 5 pupils at State Primary School 064966 Perjuangan. Data collection was carried out through a learning outcome test consisting of 20 questions covering the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. The pupils were given a pre-test before the lesson and a post-test after participating in the lesson using the ‘Fractions Adventure’ TV programme and the ‘Fractions Adventure Map’. The data were analysed using Normalised Gain (N-Gain) to determine the extent of improvement in the pupils’ learning outcomes. The results of the study showed that all pupils achieved an increase in their scores following the lessons. The average N-Gain obtained was 0.73, which falls within the high category. A total of 13 pupils (65 per cent) were in the high category and 7 pupils (35 per cent) were in the moderate category; there were no pupils in the low category. These results indicate that the use of the ‘Fractions Adventure’ TV programme and the ‘Fractions Adventure’ Map can serve as an alternative learning medium that helps pupils understand arithmetic operations with fractions through visual, active and contextual learning experiences, whilst integrating elements of Toba Batak culture.
