MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN MEMBACA PERMULAAN MELALUI MEDIA KARTU HURUF PADA SISWA KELAS I SDN 141 PEKANBARU

Abstract

This study aims to describe the planning, implementation, and assessment of learning used to improve the early reading skills of first-grade students at SDN 141 Pekanbaru through letter card media. The background of this research is the low early reading ability of students, particularly in recognizing letters, blending syllables, and reading simple words, so that a concrete and attractive learning media was needed. This research used a qualitative approach with a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design following the Kemmis and McTaggart model, carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 29 first-grade students, consisting of 15 boys and 14 girls. Data were collected through tests, observation, and interviews, then analyzed using descriptive statistics with percentage formulas. The results showed that classical mastery increased from 82.76% in the pre-cycle to 86.21% in Cycle I, and reached 93.10% in Cycle II, while the class average score rose from 73.10 to 82.07. These findings indicate that letter card media is effective in helping students recognize letters, read syllables, and read simple words, so it can be recommended as an alternative media for early reading instruction in the lower grades of elementary school.
